Sears "Mail Order" Home
From 1908-1940, Sears Roebuck and Company sold more than 100,000
homes through their Mail-Order Modern Home Programs. Entire homes
arrived by railroad, including precut lumber, curved staircases--
all the way down to the nails, paint and varnish. Sears provided
every detail to finish your new home. Familes picked out their home
according to their need, taste and pocketbook. Sears provided all
the material instructions and, for many, even financing for their
new home.
Although no official tally exists of the number of Sears mail-order
homes that still survive today, a growing curiosity evoked by current
homebuyers, architectural historians and enthusiasts has created
an almost cult following and identified literally 1000's of these
houses still survive today in varying degrees of condition and original
appearance.
